The violin is my voice. My aim is to move and be moved.
At four years old a violin was put in my hands. It hasn't left since. Having studied classical music until the age of 15, and then hearing Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster I realized I had a lot more to learn about music and the world. I also realized that I could have more than one musical passion. Thus began my lifelong journey to learn music from around the world, from celtic, bluegrass and old time to more recently Brazilian choro and forro.
Music is a privilege and an opportunity to create and share beauty.
I remained a closet fiddler while getting my B.Mus. in classical music from Brandon University in Manitoba, Capilano College in Vancouver and La Universidad de Colima in Mexico. Fast forward a few years and I received a Diploma in Professional Music from The Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. In 2014 I hit the road running and flying with Vancouver's Electronic/Indian/Irish band Delhi 2 Dublin. An opportunity that has opened my eyes, my heart and my mind in so many ways. Prior to this adventure, I co-founded BC-based bands The Rakish Angles and Sostenuto and have had the privilege of performing with Dream Theatre, Alejandro Sanz, Gooral, Beat Circus, Mark Berube, Berklee World Strings, and various orchestras and chamber ensembles. Between 2005-2011 I toured more extensively with BC's The Gruff and CR Avery. My playing can be heard on the recordings of some awesome folks: Christa Couture, Shuyler Jensen, Joseph Blood, Shelley O'Brien, Shyn Digg, Ben Fast, Zo-Li, DJ ASLAM.
Who you are is defined by what you are willing to struggle for.
In the film/tv world I've recorded strings for producer/composer Hamish Thomson for 2 seasons of the hit TV series Chesapeake Shores, as well as many other Hallmark and Life Network productions, for Matthew Rogers' The Anachronism and Randall Okita's Machine With Wishbone, and more. I composed and played for Julie Ruffell's film Acescence and Hallmark's The Christmas Snowman.
Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.
The way in which I learned fiddle tunes (transcribing them by hand, full albums at a time), led me to do work for a number of people - either transcribing, or digitally editing sheet music. My clients have included Matt Glaser, Darol Anger, Eugene Friesen, Alison Brown, and others. A book of some of my original music is available here.
To come full circle I have the privilege of teaching some truly inspiring violinists and fiddlers privately and at camps and workshops. Don't forget to check out my e-course Fiddle Techniques for the Violinist!
